Needlepoint Crewel

These needlepoint designs have the flavor of the old style of Crewel ...Crewel is embroidery using wool on linen.......when I first started painting needlepoint , Crewel was very popular....

I remember it's popularity then - my grandmother did crewel, but it was one form of needlework I never liked doing - These are beautiful. I would do them in needlepoint, but not as embroidery.

I taught myself crewel in college, inspired by the Erica Wilson books and television show. It is a wonderful start to needlepoint as you have to learn so many stitches.

These are lovely, Gail. Crewel is a classic and it is undergoing something of a revival. It's not as popular as quilting but embroiders are exploring it much more now than they did 10 years ago.

When I learned needlepoint in 1968, about all we did was basketweave - so it was a blessed relief from the crewel our grandmothers tried to teach us. It was repetitive and relaxing.

These are lovely! I think we all learned crewel, after the pillowcase embroidery!
