NO my name is not Squiggee....granted, in this day and age of people have all sorts bizarre names..I was born in 1950 at George Washington Hospital to a couple that would hardly name their first child Squiggee....lol...Squiggee is our 11 year old Boston Terrier.. ...her registered name is Miss Squiggee Buns Hendrix....the Buns was added to make her name sound more girlie....hence the name of my company became Squiggee...named after Squiggee but purely by a fluke....
We had a little fox terrier mix named Pookie...she was around 2 1/2 when she was killed by a passing truck...she had escaped out the kitchen door and was hit....She was a pistol and our Miss Bubble's constant companion...Bubbles was a Springer/Lab mix and was so devastated by the whole death that she and our third dog Jake wouldn't eat or show any interest in life...so our country vet suggested a puppy....In our experience this works...not that the dogs are crazy in love with the new family member ..... it gives them something to hate ... they start to eat and pay attention to life again....
After Pookie was killed it was hard to find a small dog and a dog that would not cost a year's salary..lol..being in rural PA all the dogs at shelters were mixed with Shepard and we didn't want a big dog...so I found an ad in a little local paper advertising Bostons.....the breeder was in rural West Virginia, and had a runt of a litter..her parents were show dogs but Squiggee was short and did not have the proper markings , so she was reduced in price...mind you even a Boston on sale is pricey, but I had some extra cash and it seemed the best thing to do....
I had always thought that Bostons were handsome, but I had only seen pictures and never a puppy....so we got a sitter for Bubbles and Jake and off we went....It was January and they were calling for Snow...but it was always calling for snow ....we drove and drove and went down and down into the most remote area of WV ...you could almost hear the banjo's
playing in the trees...well we finally found the kennels...we first met Squiggee's parents..her father was huge and her mother small... then the breeder came out of a backroom with our little girl and put her in my arms....my God was she ugly...in fact i don't think I have ever seem such a ugly dog ...big black bug eyes with curled ears all attached to a huge square head and a pig curled tail....I was so taken back I was speechless..... I thought only a mother could love this dog until she snuggled next to my chin...I could feel my heart melt !!! so off we went...she was very small she fit in my two hands , this was lucky because a blizzard had started and we were forced to stop for the night at a hotel that didn't take animals...I just walked in with Squiggee under my jacket ..she never made a peep......she was so affectionate and good...sweet from her first day... Calling her princess Pookie or one of the other names we had discussed on the drive there was out of the question...we would have to rethink....I can't remember which of us said she reminded us of the character Squiggee on Laverne and Shirley...he had big bug eyes and his hair was very black... same balack hair and bug eyes....we laughed, and the name stuck..........
so when I opened my eBay account and needed a name, I chose I Squiggee....so when I decided to start my company and explore canvases with embellishments...the name was already in place...Unusual, but unique .....their you go....the name seemed to make people smile. When they learned how the company name came about by accident , it seemed to tickle people....
Our sweet Squiggee is old now and it makes me smile to know that she will always be remembered when ever you see the Squiggee logo....not every Boston has their own Needlepoint Design Company....
