In The Beginning.....

I am going to take you through the process of how a design is produced....

If you look at the top picture you will see the original painted canvas and color chart for a small 11" round ,on 18st pillow , designed under Festival Designs by Gail in the 80's. Three Carp I called it. I can't tell you how many of these canvases I painted and sold . It was very popular. You might have one...lol... At the time I only sold to the one shop that I did all the custom work for.....freelance, mind you never an employee and never selling or releasing the rights to the images I painted on needlepoint canvas....are we on the same page?....OK....

I start with an idea...like all things in life an idea is just that ...a thought....sometimes I am inspired by outside forces...a photo and program about feeding carp......you never know what will catch your attention .....then I do a sketch....see above..these are always simple and they are placed under the blank canvas and used to reference placement mostly....then I mix my colors and off we go...I paint on the canvas just as I would on any surface ...the difference being I am mindful of the individual stitches.....I have been painting on needlepoint canvases so long it is now second nature... after I am finished the sketch is filed with a color chart for future reference and I take a picture...this was long before digital pictures...I used a 35mm camera and had a print from the hard negative....all the negatives are saved and filed...if a piece is very detailed I take multiple shots of details..this helps in the repainting...all these canvases are stitch painted but not counted like the Squiggee is from digital pictures...digital and the single stitch were made for each other...this process using 35mm photos was much more labor intensive...and unlike the way wholesale works..I did not have the original to paint from...lol...the original was the first canvas sold......after all I am a commercial artist and time is money...people have the misconception that I have a copy of every canvas I have ever done...please, the Colosseum couldn't hold 39 years of canvases I have painted...

Painting from a hard 35mm picture I came close enough and always painted on the stitch...so everyone was happy....remarkably the image was very true to the original....

This was all created in the Early 80's......

fast forward to May 21st 2001.....I combined two ( see top photo of blue and white cherry blossom sketch...this design was created by me in the 70's adapted from an old crewel piece) of my original Festival Designs by Gail line and came up with the center photo ....this 15"r 18st canvas was added to the wholesale line being leased by me for reproduction.........and never returned to me after I cancelled the lease.........OY! you say! exactly................................to be continued !!!!!

This piece was created on May 21st, 2001
